HVAC System

The mechanical system provides both heat and fresh air to ensure the comfort of those in the building .

  • The heating in the building is supplied by natural gas-fired boilers in the boiler room next to the gym.
  • The heat is carried to heaters along the exterior walls of the classrooms.
  • Fresh air is supplied to all of the classrooms from a heat recovery unit.
  • The fresh air enters the classrooms through low wall displacement grilles on the corridor side of the classrooms.

Retention Basin and Rain Gardens

A retention basin is used to manage storm water runoff from our parking lot and school grounds. It is an
amazing filter that improves water quality before it flows into Bellingham Bay. Think of it as an artificial lake
with vegetation around the perimeter–pretty cool!

A rain garden is a planted depression or a hole that allows rainwater runoff from our impervious parking
lot to be filtered and absorbed. Besides being nice to look at, these parking lot plants have an important job.

Math Walls

The interior walls are designed to teach those who walk down them math! Look closely, and you can find
fractions, angles, and geometric patterns.

Aquarium Portal

Students can sit and look through this portal to watch part of the salmon life cycle. The salmon are
eventually released into Padden Creek, to support our native salmon runs.

School-based food education gives students the opportunity to learn about and fall in love with
healthy food from an early age, and paves the path to making life-long healthy choices.
Common Threads, our community partner, provides coordinated leadership and support for school-based
food education through our trained Food Educators. Our garden is home to kale, kohlrabi, cabbage, lettuce, peas, herbs, and more!

Glacial Erratic

A glacial erratic is a piece of rock that differs from the size and type of rock native to the area in which it
rests. “Erratics” take their name from the Latin word errare, and are carried by glacial ice, often over
distances of hundreds of miles. Erratics can range in size from pebbles to large boulders.
Plus, these large rocks add texture and interest to our back parking lot.
